it's like the whole debate on if bows or cross bows are better. They each have their own benefits and drawbacks. bows can fire more arrows in the same amount of time than cross bows. Cross bows are often more powerful and can be fired in an instant, aiming can be done at your leisure.

they're both good and powerful on their own rights. However, if we're talking about range, bows can outrange them, though you'd need a longer draw or stronger & more flexible bow to withstand a stronger pull-bend. Or, measure out the angle + the possible error the windspeed can affect.

You'd need to be in a desirable range/distance when using crossbows. what they're outranged by most bow n' arrow, they make it up for the control (like you've said, you can just aim and shoot at your leisure) and faster shots when fired, while offsetting their reload delay too. Crossbows do win for me, if we're talking about firepower.

You are right that spears have an advantage for range and training speed (novices can wield it with little training), but there's a reason that Romans had a gladius at their side: Once you pass the tip, the sword becomes the victor.

Actually, "Spellward" is a decent class title. Not all weapons are swords. A "Spellward" is an appropriate sounding name for a general "Spell sword" concept that applies to more than swords. "Mystic Knight" is another one, but, "Spellward" is only one word.
